Two tanks belonging to the Distillery of Levira caused the flood, according to a video posted online, which showed the wine cascading down a hillside through the town of two thousand people.

The alcohol spill did not result in any fatalities or material damage, but the red liquid did inundate nearby roads and land, as well as a cellar or two, according to local newspaper Diário do Coimbra.

According to local media, the spill triggered a local environmental alert, as the Anadia fire department tried to redirect the wine to avoid contaminating the Certima River. The company Levire Distillery, apologized for the incident and said that they would take care of the damages.

In a statement, the company said,

“We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately, We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible.”
